Woo-Hoo, we’re on the cover! The cover of the Elk Rapids News, that is. If you live in Torch Lake Township the paper will be in your mailbox tomorrow, but if you just can’t wait, you can download a pdf of NW Antrim County: Finding the best route for fall colors, complete with an attractive Mark Stone map. Now if we can just get some pretty weather somewhere in here, the roadside will look like this:
OK, that picture is from last October. We’re going to run out now and take a couple pictures from right now before the sun goes away. Have faith. Antrim County is a reliable source of Ooh! and Ahh! in October.

Um, by the time we shooed the wild turkeys and suicidal deer off the Flat Road the light had faded and we did not obtain any 2009 Color Tour photos. Stay tuned for those. We have not lost hope. We did take some pictures of graves at the old Catholic cemetery on US-31 south of Atwood, and discovered two that have G.A.R. Post 227 flagholders . . . with flags. Must ask Chris Czopek who puts the flags in the holders after all this time. You see that I am still very much in the 19th century.

We’re all wondering what kind of color season this year will bring, aren’t we? Will the colors be bright? Will the weather be pleasant? How long will it all last before the leaves are gone? Northern Wisconsin was lovely on our recent trip across to Minnesota. But every day with leaves on the trees, be they green or yellow or red, is a happy day for me.

The first autumn I owned this place, I lay on the sandy rise north of the cottage and watched the leaves drift down, one by one. It was all so beautiful that I wanted to capture an image of a falling leaf. I tried and tried, but never managed. I fell asleep with the camera pressed to my face, utterly content.

My mom and dad are trying to decide exactly the right time to tour north for the color season with stops first in Antrim County and then on to the U.P. We’re thinking next weekend should be prime. You think? However, I don’t suppose it matters because SOMEWHERE along the route there’s bound to be lots of color.

I think you’re right. Second weekend in October is usually a good bet. Funny thing–sometimes the color is prettier and earlier in Detroit than in Antrim. Grayling is very nice, too. Yup. Somewhere along the way they WILL see lots of color. (And then when they get to Huron Bay they’ll see you and Barry!)

Are you suggesting we’re colorful? ha ha ha…

Hadn’t thought of it that way, but I take your point. Judging by how much I’m looking forward to seeing Rob the Firefighter and the Lady Alicia tomorrow, I’m betting your mom and dad will think you and Barry are more wonderful–and, OK, colorful!–than all the woods in the UP put together.
