The sweetness of late autumn

This has been an excellent day all the way around—a nice change from some of the others we've had lately. I could unreel it in any direction and enjoy it all over again. It seems worth remembering each of its pleasures, because I suspect there is some other day lurking out there in the dim future when I will need help remembering blessings to count.

I am drawn to Banks Township in a general way. It is full of high ridges with sweeping views of the Bay, ribbon roads flowing past good farms, and people who are determined to work together. On Saturday, September 24, the Banks Township Hall in Ellsworth will be absolutely irresistible.

As you head north on US-31 past the Eastport Market, you come to a road on the left marked Old Dixie Highway. Before promoters hung that name on it, it was just "the flat road"—a place filled with mysteries and old, old stories.
