Homecoming is upon us once again. It may look as if the elk in front of the Alden State Bank is wearing a Halloween costume, but that would be silly. He’s wearing a football jersey. This is, after all, Spirit Week in Elk Rapids.
But the orange and black motif got me thinking. Not a moment too soon to plan for Halloween I always say. (I start saying that in August, on account of I love Halloween.) Katherine has chosen her costume. She wrote, Here’s what I’d go as for Halloween… I love the “hair.”
I’ve been AWOL lately, but I did bring you back a little present. Remember visiting the chestnut orchard and learning about heartnuts? Well, I found some heartnuts down at Bargy’s of all places. Happy Valentine’s Day (really, really early):
I have another surprise for you, too, but I’m not ready to tell you about it yet. These secret faces are clues.

I love surprises. I usually love puzzles too, but I’m thinking those of us from Away will have difficulty figuring this one out?
We are thinking about Halloween here too; will there be a photo of you and the duo in your Halloween costumes this month?

Even people from Around Here are going to be puzzled by the faces for a little while.
Miss Sadie, the Cowboy and I have not given a lot of thought to our Halloween costumes, although perhaps we should consider going as internet installers. That seems to be all we can think about at the moment.

Well, that and excellent treats.

I think the Elk is wearing orange in case some hunter gets a little too zealous (or drinks too much)

I’m pretty sure someone would have to be a hunter from Away in order to blaze away at the elk in front of the bank. Pretty sure. But for the next little while Miss Sadie, who is an attractive fawn color, will be keeping close to my side at all times.

Love the elk! We ended up in Houghton last night during Michigan Tech’s homecoming festivities and had to wait for dinner at a local restaurant. Where did all those people come from? My brother is up hunting somewhere east of Antrim County this weekend. Bet you have lots of extra folks around, too.

At the moment we are peaceful. Things have returned to their local rhythms–pleasingly lively, but not frenetic. That could change. The Cowboy is trying to catch a chipmunk in the woodpile, and who knows where that will lead.
