Spring is full of surprises. Things to look forward to. Things to remember. Favorite children’s books, a fine writing coach, Mama Nature’s little reminders of who’s boss.
Thomas Lynch is coming to the Central Lake Library to talk about writing and to read from Apparitions and Late Fictions. Now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. Michael Heffernan is coming with him, too. Two poets in one evening. Central Lake may never be the same. Save the date–that would be Friday, May 20–and call for a reservation. It’s free, but seats are limited. If you enjoy poetry, or good writing, or good stories, I don’t see how you can go wrong.

What on earth did Katherine find? I’m guessing some kind of fungus, but that thing could belong to another planet! It just needs a little gnome sitting on it with a fishing rod, really, but maybe the recent bad weather scared them all away?

It’s not just any old kind of fungus. It’s a morel. Perhaps a somewhat unusual morel—this is Katherine we’re talking about—but the very first one I’ve seen so far this spring, and I’ve been looking. (Katherine always finds them before I do.)
Right now it’s raining again, and thundering. Mama Nature and I are on the outs, as I think she could have arranged things so as to give me a little more time with Rob the Firefighter, but at least he made it home safely, so we have that going for us. I digress. Where I was going with all this is that it’s supposed to be a bit warmer for a few days. The combination of rain and warming generally results in ‘shrooms. Stay tuned.

That morel makes my day! But we found 23 yesterday that made my day even more. You see, they were birthday morels 🙂 Spring is here!

I have no idea how many that rascally Katherine has found, but I am still ‘shroomless in Torch Lake. Sadly, this is the usual state of affairs.
I hope you enjoyed your 23 morels and your birthday very much. 🙂

Sigh. A day of housework. Sarah is bored. I keep taking blog breaks, which she reminds me is no fun for her at all. Should we go out in the rain and look for morels? Or should that be a late afternoon reward for having done all the housework? What would Miss Sadie and the Cowboy say? I think I can guess.

You might be surprised. The Cowboy is having a little nap under the desk. Miss Sadie is having a little nap in the dog room. They are not all that wild about going for walks in the rain, although once they get out there they are extremely interested in the fragrances the rain releases. Of course, there is no housework going on over here, which makes it all very peaceful in an untidy, slothful sort of way. Miss Puss feels that I should try to do better.

Is that a morel?? Oh, to find a morel…

You will, precisely when you least expect it.

Wow 23 morels. I’ve only found 2 but then again I’ve been working a lot lately so haven’t had time for morel hunting. Those I almost tripped over while walking the dog.

Two, eh? I knew you were holding out.
Tripping over them is my usual method. However, when the Lady Alicia visits she spots them immediately from 20 yards. Architects.

Lucky you on the redwing blackbird shot! My duo prevented me from getting a nice clear shot of one of those – I posted the blurry one though!
I remember reading “The Color Kittens” to my girls when they were little.

I loved those kittens. Not much of a story, but wonderful illustrations. The redwing blackbirds were everywhere, singing away. That’s the clearest photo I’ve gotten of one so far, so I’m happy. I just love the way they sound, and the way they perch on the very tippy-top of a stalk of grain.

The white Magnolia flowers look so beautiful, ours were long gone.

Thank you Nye. I used to have a huge Kentucky magnolia in a sheltered spot by my house in Detroit. It was magnificent, fragrant and lovely. I miss it, but this little one in the park in Elk Rapids was a welcome substitute.
