I am drawn to Banks Township in a general way. It is full of high ridges with sweeping views of the Bay, ribbon roads flowing past good farms, and people who are determined to work together. On Saturday, September 24, the Banks Township Hall in Ellsworth will be absolutely irresistible.
If you are from Around Here you undoubtedly trotted right over to TLV to see what on earth was going on at the north end of Torch Lake that would make Norton Bretz of all people even think about leaving Eastport, particularly on a Thursday. (The title I was going to use to lure those of you from Away was "Naked Monkeys of Central Michigan" but I didn't want to wade through all the spam.)
I don't usually wish I could be 18 again. I remember too well all the hard lessons that lay in store for me. (I just wish my body could be 18 again. That's the ticket.) The next best thing, it turns out, is to spend a day wandering around a college campus in early September.
As you head north on US-31 past the Eastport Market, you come to a road on the left marked Old Dixie Highway. Before promoters hung that name on it, it was just "the flat road"—a place filled with mysteries and old, old stories.
Babs, who has been Away, came through Kalkaska on her way back. Of course she stopped. Wouldn't you?
I've been accumulating little bits and pieces that just . . . tickle my funny bone.
