Now this is something snowbirds don’t see very often. Babs Young was down in Elk Rapids early last Thursday and captured a view of River Street bare of traffic.
You can tell that I was not down there, as there is no one parked in front of the Sweet Shop, where they sell bear claws of such excellence that I am forced to avoid the town altogether for days at a time. And what does Babs have to say about all this? Downtown Elk Rapids early last Thursday morning. Blue sky but lots of blowing snow. Probably below 0º. It’s been a lovely winter.
A lovely winter. Drop dead gorgeous.

Wow, that street scene looks COLD! No blowing snow in front of the coffee shop where I’m holed up this morning, but the patronne says that everyone is adding cream these days. Need that fat content to stay warm!

I want to go hole up at the Torch Lake Cafe with the netbook, but I sort of want to be teleported there. I’ve never liked cream in my coffee, but I will cheerfully inhale a classic roadhouse breakfast of eggs and bacon and hashbrowns and buttered toast when it is this cold.

I do like that white tree. It’s a nice complement to the buildings on the right. As I always say, like the proverbial record, at least if it has to be cold, the pretty snow adds interest.
I must add that this comment comes with shivers this morning. We’re up to a toasty 31 just now, with a windchill of 24,but it was 28 and who knows what windchill when I made myself roll out and serve up breakfast to the birdies. I’m going to go find some warmer clothes, put on a pot of soup and finish a blog post. No heading out to the docks this morning. Maybe this afternoon. Maybe.

That would be the proverbial broken record, of course. The cold makes my mind skip.

The trees are one of the most attractive features in Elk Rapids, which is saying something, as it is a lovely town.
(We are breaking lots of records this winter, and scratching more. Perhaps that accounts for the skipping . . . )
OK, even the Cowboy is rolling his eyes.

Oh my. No wonder it’s cold in TX if it looks that frigid north of us. brrrr…here, too.

That does not follow, but it is true nonetheless. I am astonished at the wide swaths of frigid blue that decorate the daily weather maps. It appears that everywhere north of Key West is getting more than its share of grief. Everywhere, that is, but Alaska, where it’s been unseasonably warm. Now I ask you, what the heck is that about????

Very wise to stay away from sweetie shops.

I am constrained to remark that if we had a sweetie shop I would rummage through the stock in search of the book-loving forest ranger of my dreams – which might be even more problematic than the bear claws. Life is so complicated.

That looks so cold that I have to go get a sweater before I continue my day.

I am wearing my snowpants – at my desk. I wish I were kidding.

Too cold and snowy for this Texas girl. I have some dear friends who live in Elk Rapids. I hope they’re staying warm. My first thought about the vacant street was that they were vacant because all the cars are frozen to the driveways. Brrrrrr!

Did I know you had friends in Elk Rapids? I didn’t remember that. Those friends are probably sensible people who drive trucks that would never dream of getting stuck anywhere. This friend drives an impractical sedan and once famously got stuck in her own garage. Winter can be a trial, but it improves my character.

I think it would be neat for you and my friends to get in contact. I suspect you have a lot in common. I mentioned you to her the last time we spoke by phone and she thought it would be neat, too. Elk Rapids, for one thing, LOL
