Babs was out and about during a warmish bit last Monday, after it had rained. She wrote: It is our fondest hope that one day soon these cherry trees will be filled with blossoms, but not this week. Indeed.
The rest of the week featured snow, sleet, slush, more rain, ice–all of it landing on us like the biblical plagues on Egypt. Early Friday morning Miss Sadie, the Cowboy and I went out for the newspaper and a bit of ice skating. The mailbox was frozen shut, the car doors were frozen shut, and the trees clicked and pinged gently in the breeze as if they were made of glass.
On Saturday, for variety, Mama Nature left us some new snow on the deck–very dry snow, fluffy as can be. Upon close inspection, we could see the individual flakes.
We are all longing for real spring. We will have to wait a bit, but there are signs of hope. Over at Verdant Ground every window is full of tiny tomato plants and pepper plants and onions, all of them started from seed and coming along nicely. All we need is a week of sunshine . . .

Wishing you warmth and sunshine. Over here in the UK it has been an exceptionally odd spring… Much colder and snowier than normal, but also very dry. We are left wondering if Miss Spring knows she is going to have to ‘go some’ to catch up with the scheme of things.

UGH! I AM SO SORRY! I can feel that. This is why I moved “down south”. But it’s been damn dark and wet and cold here, too.
Seeing the orchards is like seeing where I was and would be seeing had I stayed in Door County. Same old scene. Comfort for some, but not for me.
What green is sunning in your windows at home?

Plants in the window–now there’s a welcome sight! My thoughts are turning to gardening, though I haven’t felt like getting out in the dirt with a spade yet. Maybe next week?

It must be cold if the cherry trees have to wear socks.

What’s the purpose of the whitewash (or whatever) on the trunks of the trees? The only thing that comes to mind is insect control. It’s lovely, for sure.
I’m going to have to tend to a flat of strawberries tonight. The gardens are starting to perk along – kale, leeks, cabbage, beans, peppers, strawberries, zuchinni and yellow squash. Actually, some of those are winter crops that will be disappearing about the time the blackberries, peaches, okra, tomatoes and such come on.
Your time is coming. There will be blossoms and fruit galore – I’m so hungry for fresh cherries, but I have to depend on your folks to ship those to us.
There are bird babies galore everywhere, and baby fish, too. I’ve not seen any fledglings yet, but I can year them – especially the mockingbirds and blue jays. The blue jay mommy and daddy are flying back and forth for all they’re worth, to grab shelled pecans from their stash here on my balcony. 😉
The ice photos are just beautiful. I love the wash of color.

Oh dear, frozen mailboxes on April 15th seem just wrong. Not that we’ve been toasty warm here in Massachusetts, but the snow and ice has been gone from my neighborhood for a couple weeks. You did a nice job with those snowflake close-ups, but I imagine you would just as soon not have them to photograph anymore!

It don’t think the apple and cherry growers will need to worry about another early thaw followed by a deep freeze.

When I saw the title I thought…well…don’t need to read that…already know the weather report. It’s full of that d*(& snow.

I figure Torch Lake itself is a lot more enjoyable than blogging at this time…?
