Babs Young has done it again. She writes: I think we are close to past peak but around the lakes it’s still very colorful. We have had great weather this week in that it would rain one minute and be sunny the next. I think it’s “lake effect”. You can see here how the sun is shining on the trees and the dark gray clouds are moving across. This is the north end of Torch Lake.
Just think—all that might have been covered with two feet of snow had we been just a little farther east. Our hearts go out to all the people on the eastern seaboard who are buried under the early blizzard without benefit of heat or light. Mama Nature on a tear is a fearsome thing.

Never thought I’d see a day when PA gets 10 inches of snow before Torch…..

I can’t decide whether it’s a case of simple justice or life being unfair. Either way, you have my deepest sympathy. I had a little dusting of snow the other morning and almost made a grumpy post. I’d feel like an idiot now, wouldn’t I!

The contrast of bright, sunlit trees against dark clouds, and then both reflected on the calm, glassy surface of the lake, make for an arresting photo. Stops me in my tracks. Lovely!

Isn’t it though? I love sunlit trees against gunmetal clouds. I pretty much love everything about October.

I recently kayakkkked solo in this very spot and tried to paddle to the reflections. I once encountered a solo woman kayakkker at this very spot who told me “everything of value is reflected unto you”. This may be holy ground. Katy

That is one possibility. I’ve pretty much concluded that it’s all holy ground, and that we’d better start treating it accordingly before it’s too late. Another possibility, of course, is that you and the woman you encountered are in harmony with the Quaker precept that there is that of God in everyone. Either way it’s a rewarding paddle, eh?

What a beautiful view.(Again)
The colorful trees are in perfect contrast to the blue-grey clouds. Very effectfull. Gunmetal clouds! They really look heavy 🙂

They were heavy. They settled themselves over the landscape and stayed for awhile. Then they dropped a lot of rain and moved on. It got nippy here last night – I should have worn a warmer jacket to walk the Duo, but the stars were brilliant so on balance it was good.

As beautiful as the lake, sky and trees are, I kept looking at the houses, wondering, “What must it be like to live in such a place?” It seems to me it would be the greatest blessing on earth. But of course, every place has its beauty. It’s the unusual and the different that can catch the eye and make us really look at the world.

The interesting thing is that most of the largest places around the lake aren’t primary homes at all but summer cottages. I would take you to see some of them, but alas, we would not be invited in for tea, and you know how I feel about treats.
Most people who get to spend any time at all on or near Torch Lake think it’s a lovely thing indeed, whether the place is a mansion or a tiny log cabin. Or even a Writing Studio and Bait Shop in walking distance. 🙂
