Babs Young has been out and about observing the fauna of Charlevoix County. She writes: This was a few days ago in East Jordan. Now with all that open water and the ducks floating in the foreground, I didn’t think these dudes were too wise, but then what do I know. Maybe the ice out there was a bit thicker then near the shore.
Ice fishing is an art with an extra zing to it. A person could drown. Every now and then somebody Around Here manages to lose a fishing shanty when the ice goes out before he thinks it should. Of course, this year we’re being treated to a fine freeze-thaw-freeze cycle. We’re back to the low teens overnight, and if those ducks don’t watch it they’ll turn into quacksicles.
So there you have it, folks, the news from the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix, brought to you as a community service by Torch Lake Views. Heckuva thing when you can’t even trust winter to be winter any more, eh?

Quacksicles LOL!!!! what an excellent word!
The people out there look very unsafe….nothing for me that’s for sure.

They probably aren’t as unsafe as they look. Probably. But I’m not going out there to interview them.

We noticed today that north Lake Leelanau, which was starting to look unsafe early last week, seems to have refrozen, but even last week there were still some shanties out there where I wouldn’t want to be. The ducks, I think, have a failsafe system.

I think the ducks just like to get out there to lure coyotes onto the ice.

The ducks look like they are enjoying the cold weather, I often wonder how they survive in this cold weather.

The fat. Ducks have a nice layer of protective fat. I have made note of this, and have followed their example.

That’s very observant, I’ve to take note myself. 🙂
