Babs Young writes: This family joined us for dinner at the Dockside last week.
My experience of swans has been mixed. They are large, assertive birds and have had no compunctions about letting me know when I have trespassed on their territory, particularly with respect to the peninsula near the Writing Studio and Bait Shop. But seven of them kept me company during a difficult time in my life. I walked the beaches of Lake Michigan, flinging bad poetry into the wind. They glided along, listening intently, without comment. The very best kind of therapists.
Last night Cora Stoppert and I sat on her deck on the bluff over the Bay and watched large birds fly past below. I wanted them to be cranes, but she said they were swans. She knows a great deal more than I do. I would bet on her if I were you.
Every week photographer Babs Young captures moments in northern Michigan, and every week she sends one to Torch Lake Views just for you. You can find more of her photos at the Babs Young Photo Archives and on her Blue Heaven Flickr photostream.

I have a fondness for swans, too. I’ve seen them facing up to huge dogs, then returning to their effortless, elegant glide through the water. I also once saw a daddy swan chase a gardner who’d got a little too close to the eggs his mate was sitting on. Who knew a man in wellington boots could move that fast?

I now have a great image to carry with me for the day.

Lovely post, Gerry. Beautiful photo from your friend and poignant words from you.
Reading your blog (as well as your comment recently at mine) tells me there should be a road trip to the area in my future!

Thank you, Karma! Road trips are a fine thing, and road trips to northern Michigan are a family tradition. C’mon over!

We used to have a family of swans that lived year round at the head of Keweenaw Bay…wonder what ever happened to them? Did you know that they mate for life? Pretty cool! Blessed and wonderous Memorial Day to you, Miss Gerry.

Thank you Cindy Lou. I hope that you have a fine Memorial Day as well. I did know that swans mate for life. I wondered at the history of the seven who kept company with me.

They’re like feathered Greek gods: awe-inspiringly beautiful and frightening when crossed! That’s a beautiful photo by Babs.

Babs will be pleased. I like the Greek gods simile. Very apt.
