This Saturday, May 29, half of Antrim County will head over to Barnes Park to eat roasted corn and BBQ and elephant ears. We’ll browse vendor booths for handcrafted jewelry and polished Petoskeys. We’ll hunt for the Fabulous Fossil down on the beach. If it gets warm enough, we’ll even go splashing into the Bay.
These photos are all from 2008, but they’re a pretty fair guide to what you can expect on Saturday. The Petoskey Stone Festival has become a Memorial Day tradition. There will be some new events in 2010, but all the old favorites will return.
- 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
- Booths full of rocks and minerals, jewelry, and every conceivable form of Petoskey craftwork, purveyors of local delicacies (fruit preserves, mustards, honey, maple syrup, pies)
- Full complement of Festival Food Groups
- Kids’ fishing pond
- Noon: Tommy Tropic
- 2:00 PM: Michigan State Police Canine Show
- 3:30 PM: Great Lakes Timber Show sampler
Admission is free and you’ll see a lot of cute little kids–although this particular toddler is now a big boy and you’ll hardly recognize him. I don’t see how you can go wrong.

Sounds like a grand day out. I’d love the Police canine show in particular – I have a long-standing admiration for the dogs (and their handlers, of course!). Throw them a doughnut from me, will you?
Now, I’m off to play with the new camera – ours joined yours in the “deceased” pile thanks to a size 10 shoe (not mine, hubby’s). We now have a new, shiny little Kodak to learn how to use.

Shocking, the attrition rate for little cameras this week! I’ll let you know how the dogs like their treat.

You know when I was looking at getting a digital SLR camera, my little P&S camera suddenly jumped to its demise off a table I was sitting at. To this day, I don’t know why it would have done that. 😉
BBQ chicken, corn and fried dough (elephant ears)..ah, the unofficial start to summer has begun!

Wuff. I had no idea that TLV readership extended to cameracidal hooligans.
I am reluctant to make any forecasts for fear of riling up Mama Nature. Still, it does seem that we might have a summer this year. That will make a nice change.

What fun! When you get down on the beach, wave across the Bay to us in Northport!

Thanks for the reminder. I forget to get into holiday mode since we are permanent vacationers here.

Ha! I am willing to bet that you are on full Summer Alert, fluffing up shirts, hauling out boxes of books, and ordering quantities of York mint patties for my special jar. So Stone Circle starts up again when, please? Because I am trying to memorize my rude poem.
