Summer twilight: Barnes Park, 2009

As I left the other day job Sunday, the sky was turning smoky rose. No time to waste. I trotted over to Barnes Park along with everybody else to watch the sun go down.

It was cool enough that parents wore fleece jackets with their shorts. It was warm enough that kids raced along the beach, wet hair flying.

A young mother watched her children. It was time to come in. Not yet . . . just a little longer . . . it’s not dark yet!

Twilight is long and gentle at this latitude at this time of year. The air cooled. The water felt warm. The children hunkered down, noses just above the quiet surf, holding onto the last moments of the summer day. There would be warm blankets and pajamas back at the camp site. A bedtime story. A goodnight kiss. But right now . . . Not yet . . . It’s not dark yet . . .

And then it was. Good night.
