My mother made wonderful birthday cakes. My favorite was a chocolate layer cake iced with seven-minute frosting and drizzled with bittersweet chocolate. This concoction made decorative fluffy peaks on top of the cake. The next day a crust would form. I loved that crust. The other day I was reminded of all this when we had brilliant sun, blue skies, and that kind of shiny snow crust that we get when a lot of the fluffy stuff is topped of with a little bit of the sleety stuff. I could just eat it up.

Tom Vranich published this photo in the Elk Rapids News this week, which tickled me no end. He cropped it differently, and I suspect, more artfully.
Terrific snowshoeing, sledding and tobogganing weather. Also really good for making snow forts. I recommend you try it. Here’s a link to a seven-minute frosting recipe in case you want to try it, too. It sounds like the one Mom used.

Thank you Gerry,
I enjoyed reading about Mom’s Silhouette Cake.
In the past, when I could use Mom’s double boiler pan, I made seven minute frosting many times and people loved its marshmallowness.
