I am trying to cultivate patience. I know the Big Show is coming soon but I want to savor the first signs of its arrival. The half bushel of apples – Galas and Macs – in my unheated guest room. The pumpkin on the corner of the deck. Squash and onions and garlic and carrots and potatoes and soup bones in the refrigerator bins.
The trees haven’t made up their minds yet, but the geese know. Autumn has begun.
Here are more little signs of the changing season—click for a larger version.
- Delicate beginnings
- First splash of red
- Beach washing
- First red tree at Rocky Cove
- Yellow mushroom
- Thistledown
- Browned blossoms
- Pastel sunset

Leslie, you’re headed into spring and can look forward to telling us how hot it gets in Canberra in January . . . I wonder what the signs of changing seasons are there? Somehow I can’t see migrating emus in the sky, so it must be something else . . .
