For Norm Taube

Posted on October 1, 2008

Constable Norm Taube died on Sunday. He was a big guy, a Detroit cop for 20 years and a security officer at Shanty Creek and Cherry Capital airport after that. Patrolling the Township was a little quieter. When he was appointed to the job, most people didn’t expect him to actually do much. Torch Lake Township isn’t exactly a hotbed of criminal activity. Norm surprised us. He made the job, tending to a lot of the little irritants that arise in every community and keeping them from becoming major issues. He answered calls about illegal fireworks, noisy parties and underage drinking. He’d swing through the parking lot at the IGA near closing time, mosey around the nooks and crannies between the Lake and the Bay, make sure Sonny’s was buttoned up for the night.

Eventually of course we took it for granted that he’d be around, making sure that hikers at the Nature Preserve, campers at Barnes Park, and dog walkers at the Day Park all behaved ourselves. We’ll miss him. Our condolences to his wife, Gail, and the rest of the family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 3 at 5:00 pm at the new Township Hall.
