There are so many things going on that I thought I’d better start telling you about them before I forgot.  Besides, once I put it on Torch Lake Views I always know where to find it myself.  Lessee now.

This week:

  • The Eastport Market’s outdoor produce section is open under the awning
  • Dockworks is pulling boats out of storage and launching them at the Day Park for their first voyages of 2008
  • Schoolhouse Antiques is open on weekends
  • The latest post on Our Town: Antrim County  is chockfull of places to take visiting grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or your ownself – see Prevent Nature Deficit Disorder – Play Outside
  • King’s has Killer Asparagus

And that’s not all!

Wilkinson Summer Lecture Series
Monday, June 9, 2008, 7:30 pm
Old Torch Lake Township Hall

You might wonder why the Wilkinson Homestead Historical Society would bring noted Michigan historian Bob Morgridge to Eastport to present The Morgan Family of Boyne City (which is not, as even the most geographically challenged among us knows, in Torch Lake Township).  Well, I’m not going to tell you why, because this story has a tragic Eastport mystery at its heart, and I have no intention of spoiling it for you.  This is a great opportunity to hear one of the best lecturers in the field of local history tell an extraordinary tale.

Fathers Day Fly-In and
Pancake Breakfast
Sunday, June 15, 2008, 8:00 am – noon
Torchport Airpark

The Torchport celebrates Fathers Day with an all-you-care-to-eat pancake breakfast and a fly-in that brings every kind of small plane you’ve ever dreamed of right here to the Township.  Remember what it was like back in the 1950’s when someone in the neighborhood brought home a new car and everybody gathered ’round to admire it and discuss its merits?  (I know, I know, we were just little kids, but remember?) Well, that’s what small plane owners are still like, and they will be happy to show you the remarkable features of their beloved flying machines.  In fact, some of those planes will be 1950’s vintage. Besides all that, there will be prizes. There will be an open house at the model home. And pancakes. My dad may come all the way from California for this.

Dedication/Ribbon cutting ceremony
New Township Hall (Community Service Building)
Saturday, June 28, 2008
1:00 – 3:00 pm

Details to follow . . . but Elva Cowell says the planning committee is on the case and there will be tours of the building, quantities of Dignitaries, and a good deal of entertainment value.  I suggested a parade from the old Township Hall to the new one, but there are only two or three people in the Township who could march that far and the price of gas being what it is the rest of us don’t want to drive, either.  Ah well.  Carpool to the festivities.  There will be overflow parking at the Torchport.
