The nice thing about the internet is that you can connect in happy ways with people from anywhere – as we did with Australian Marcelle Pollington on, of all things, the subject of geraniums. I thought of her as I listened to oral history interviews of community elders in Elk Rapids. She would have fit right in with Marie Veliquette and Betty Beeby and Ruth and Leonard Klein, trading memories of growing up during a worldwide depression, coming of age during the war. (Marcelle enlisted in the WAAF in 1942, and writes about those days in Grandma’s House.) So Happy Australia Day from Michigan!

Ahem. I know, I know – Australia Day is January 26. But I’m pretty sure that by the time I get around to posting things it’s already the next day in Australia.
