Unless you stumbled in here for the first time today, you know King’s is a great place to pick apples. (And cherries and raspberries and peaches and nectarines but I digress.) Last Thursday a story in the travel section of USA Today confirmed this wisdom, and even mentioned drumlins.
This is all excellent news. We can expect hordes of casual apple pickers to descend on us in the next couple of months, and we are ready for them. Wait until they find out how many apple orchards there are in Antrim County alone. The main thing to remember is that USA Today readers are not looking for a local foods experience. No, they are looking for an agricultural amusement park experience. I believe our corn mazes and wagon rides and fresh pies have been too modest. We should think big. How about dumping a gazillion apples in Torch Lake and having the World’s Largest Bobbing Competition?
Maybe not. I’m not so good at the vision thing. How about fireworks in the shape of apples? OK, I’m going to take a nap. You can read the latest orchard report from King’s. Let me know if you come up with a good idea for the Agricultural Theme Park. And remember. The Macs are Mine.

An apple bobbing event in the lake sounds ingenious. I like the way you think big.

Ah, yes, but Gerry, your average tourist from anything farther south than Ann Arbor would develop hypothermia putting his or her face in Torch Lake at *any* time of year.
Nix the apple-bobbing. I see litigation in the future. 🙂

Oh my! I say let the games begin. We have an intrepid attorney right here in the Township, and he has a sense of humor, too.
Babs Young stopped by the market tonight, and said she thought that if we were going to dump apples into Torch Lake we should do it at the Infamous Sandbar at the south end. I agreed this would be a good plan. I am in the habit of agreeing with Babs.

I’m curious to know if there is an old fashioned apple pressing place in the area? I remember going to one downstate and they even had fresh cake donuts that went perfectly with fresh pressed cider! I’d love for my kids to see something like this!
I’ve been making dried apple rings these last few weeks, planning Christmas gifts early. There are so many great tasting apples are at the farmer’s market these days!

There was a cider-making operation here, but I am told it shut down when it became illegal to market unpasteurized cider. I am not sure this is true, and I’ve always thought it would be nice to have a cider press in the neighborhood. Another thing to investigate.
