The other night at the Township Board meeting there was an announcement that UTLA had made a gift to the Township. It’s a system, to be installed at the Day Park, that allows dog owners to clean up after their pets in a convenient fashion. This is, as you might imagine, of particular interest to Miss Sadie, the Cowboy and me. Thank you, UTLA.
One of the things I like about Elk Rapids is that there are, um, doggie-doo disposal stations at strategic locations. They have several types. Here’s the one at the Bass Lake access picnic area.
It’s quite a nice little pocket park, with a rustic boat launch suitable for a kayak or rowboat, a couple of picnic tables, a grill, a pleasant view. The Disreputable Duo were not pleased to be models, but I wanted you to see the scale of the thing.
In return, I agreed to make it clear that there are still, um, disposal problems at the parklet, but these cannot be laid to the canines of the area. No, the miscreants are pesky geese. Please do not feed the geese. When you return, you will find that all of the treats you provided have been duly processed, decorated with a feather or two, and left for you, little presents from the geese.

There are doggie bags available at no cost at the entrance to the Salt Marsh Trail. I wish they were available at Rainbow Haven Beach too. Yeesh…
At both places, the most icky presents I often see left behind are… used condoms! Maybe someone needs to provide disposal bags for them too!

The ever-ubiquitous geese! I have been CHASED by them while running in Philadelphia and the suburbs. But of course, I am so lonesome for Torch Lake I looked past the doggie and goose poo and saw only the lake…. 🙂

Beth, Beth – you have been too long away from Torch Lake. That is tiny little Bass Lake in this post. Charming, yes, but not Torch Lake. And Miss Sadie and the Cowboy beg to inform you that there is no doggie poo at Bass Lake. Just goose poo.

Hello Ms. Sadie and the Cowboy! Glad to hear you fellas/ladies got this nice present. Yep, that goose doo-doo can be challenging. Might be hard for the Township Board to figure out an answer to that one… 🙂

Pity the poor Township Board – or in this case perhaps the Village Board. I am unclear on jurisdictional boundaries down in Elk Rapids. A significant minority of long-suffering residents believes we should declare an open season on geese every spring, with a prize to the hunter who bags the greatest number of the pesky things. I’m not ready to go that far. Not yet anyway.
