The Wilkinson Homestead Historical Society isn’t your average local history bunch. For one thing, it sponsors a summer lecture series that covers an amazing amount of local ground in very entertaining ways. Norton Bretz recruits the speakers, which probably explains the breadth of subject matter and the penchant for the piquant. This year’s lineup:
June 1 The King Farm
John and Betsy King
July 6 The Pearl Family of Eastport
Norton Bretz
Aug. 3 History of the East Jordan Iron Works
East Jordan Iron Works Vice President Tad Malpass
Sept. 21 The Great Eastport Bank Robbery of 1993
Sharon Schultz
Oct. 5 Docks, Bridges, and Didjenos
Historian Glenn Neumann
The lectures are on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the Torch Lake Township Hall and last about one hour. They’re free; donations to the Wilkinson Homestead Historical Society are welcome. There might be treats. I’d bet on it. There will definitely be a lot of people sharing a lot of good stories. You will almost certainly find out what a Didjeno is. I don’t see how you can go wrong.
