People kept telling me about the consignment shop in Central Lake. Sure, I thought, just what I need, a new source of knick-knacks. But there I was, foiled in my plans to do laundry and looking for adventure. The only place open at 5:30 on a frigid Saturday evening was – ta-da! – the Treasure Chest. OK, this place is fun. Conie Newton (yes, one “n”) was there late, folding and fluffing, showing her son where to move the display shelves, recording sales and new arrivals. She and co-owner Lois Kaley have created an appealing place that is absolutely packed with Good Stuff at Good Prices. A bright red Ann Taylor Petites fleece jacket for $4.50 – now reduced to $2.25. Collectible dolls. (I coveted the Girl Scout, and the vintage copy of the Girl Scout Handbook.) An Atlantic Rancher shirt that sheds rain and has a cozy knit lining and all the pockets you could want. Bouquets of pretty prom dresses, already being eyed by the lovely lasses of Central Lake High. (Tuxedo rentals for the gentleman, too.) Then, just as at any fashion show, some wedding dresses for budget-wise brides.
The stock is always changing. New consignments are welcome. Conie and Lois are particular, and display items to best advantage, so you could weed out your spring wardrobe or the toybox and pocket a tidy sum at the same time. Here is a virtual shopping tour for you. Click on any photo to see a larger version. But you can’t buy the plaid fleece. I handed over my $2.65 and wore it out of the store.

I’d better check that out. I’ve not been to Central Lake, or even the “interior” of Antrim County for years now.

Now you’ve given me a great idea for a story. “Exploring the interior: Unknown Antrim.”
The Treasure Chest is really something. You might even find antique postcards there. Then you can go over to Brothers for some lunch and a look at their vintage photos. Then you can go to Bachmann’s general store, where you can find anything you really need. I don’t see how you can go wrong.

Jim! Thanks for the comment–can’t believe I forgot to put a phone number for the shop in the story. (I left out the address, too, but that’s because anyone who goes to Central Lake in search of it will find it with no trouble. The business district is only a couple blocks long.) Find the Treasure Chest at:
