Northern Michigan is definitely back in winter mode. How cold has it been? It’s been so cold we’ve put overcoats on the horses. Babs writes: In case you were wondering we are still having winter. I’m not sure these blankets really keep these guys/gals warm, but it looks good to passersby. [Ed. 2/23/09: Managed to leave that out of the post last night. Brain cramp.]
I’ll bet these are the horses that live at Conant’s elk ranch on M-88. Must ask Babs.
Every week photographer Babs Young captures moments in northern Michigan, and every week she sends one—and sometimes more than one!—to Torch Lake Views just for you. Coats? hat boots and gloves please.
My colleagues horse seems to be dressed in its coat most of the year, if it gets wet in the rain it comes out in a rash! Needless to say anything around here gets rained on often

Horses here must be wimpier. They’ve been wearing overcoats all winter–and I know it’s not as cold here as it is there!

You just know this area too well. It is indeed the elk ranch.

At least they don’t need fly masks this time of year. Love horse pictures ALWAYS! Hope to post more of my own soon–my own pictures, that is, not my own horses. Sigh!

Horses strike a chord, don’t they? A surprising number of people in the Township keep horses, which is nice for the rest of us, as we can admire them withouth having to muck out the stalls.
Don’t know much about them myself – hadn’t considered the possibility that they might mildew, hadn’t noticed that they’re swathed in blankets even when it’s not terribly cold, and as for fly masks, well. Fly masks???

Great picture of the horses. Their coats and snow call for a fantastic shot. Wonderful…
