Morning lights

A lot of people in the Township get up at dark-thirty on winter mornings to go to work, and thank goodness for them.  They turn on the lights all along our little patch of US-31, casting a warm glow.  Here’s what it was like earlier—much earlier—today:

Eastport Post Office

The big mail truck pulled up at the Post Office to deliver its load of cards and presents.  Probably some bills too but let’s look on the bright side.

Eastport Market IGA

The Eastport Market was a beacon for travelers. Hot coffee. Great deli. The only gasoline between Petoskey and Elk Rapids.  (The store will close at 6:00 pm on Christmas Eve and all of Christmas Day.  Plan accordingly.)

Simply Hair in blue dawn

Barb Higgins had the holiday lights on at Simply Hair. (You know how I always say if I look good I’ve been to see Barb recently and if I don’t I haven’t?  At lunchtime Barb cut my hair and Audrey Stolp, The Nail Lady, gave me a manicure. I positively gleam with holiday glamor.)

Sonny's Torch Lake Market beckons

Sonny’s Torch Lake Market was ready for the Breakfast Club.  There were holiday sausages in the butcher case, too.  I came home with some of those.  If you want some you’d better get over there soon.  Sonny’s will close at 3:00 on Christmas Eve, and I might need more sausages myself.

Holiday lights along US-31

All this going on and it was barely 8:00 am.  Think of the poor commuter finishing breakfast inside this cozy house . . . and facing the drive to Traverse City or Petoskey or who knows where.  On the other hand, it’s good to have work to do in these times, and good to have the morning lights in Eastport to cheer us on our way.
