It’s ten degrees outside my front door this morning, but there’s also a promise that spring will come. The Wilkinson Homestead Historical Society 2008 Geranium Order Form arrived, just in time to supply a little hope! The order deadline is February 15 for plants that will be ready in May. Go ahead – have a little faith in the face of winter.
I found these cheery geraniums posted on Marcelle’s Memories, a blog from Down Under, accompanying the poem reprinted here with permission:
Geraniums love walls
They seem to look their best
In front of ancient bricks –
Like painted soldiers, drest
And stiffly on parade.
Each scarlet bloom’s a cockade,
On a blade of green.
They make one say:
“Who would ever dream
an old brick wall
could look so gay?”

G’day from Australia! I got out a Google map and just had a good look at where you are.
I really enjoyed reading about your town this morning. 🙂
I run mom’s blog and am doing it to record her poems and stories. How lovely to see them mentioned here. She will be so pleased. We are happy to have anything at all reprinted in full, just with her name after it.
Thank you for coming and reading it. That makes my morning.

Leslie, how nice to make the connection! I’m going to edit my post to reprint your mother’s poem. It’s just the thing to brighten up a blustery Up North day. — Gerry

Lealie, thanks to you, I’m enjoying my small moments of recognition
not to say ‘fame;’.
I am quite amazed that I am to receive an Australia Day Award on 25th January 2008. To misquote dear Julie Andrews ‘ isn’t it just loverly..loverly..’

Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you enjoy my poetry which scans my life. I am 84, a little excited about getting an Australia Day Award this week for voluntary service over many years. I hope you find more poems you can relate to or just enjoy on my web site. It is still in formation compiled by my third daughter Leslie, living with her two great teenage sons in Canberra – A.C.T. I live in southern Queensland.

I think I have Marcelle’s post moved here where it belongs. It’s dated wrong – should have been 1-21-08 – but everything else is fixed!
