On my way home tonight I spotted the latest “Matt” message on Peterson’s sign. Pretty bold boast, Tim.
I will give you the excellence of your establishment’s BLT personal pizza. But what of the divine sesame crust and pesto sauce on the Chef Charles Special in Elk Rapids? The Meat Lovers marvel just down the road at Sonny’s, piled high with the butcher’s finest cuts? The tasty treats at Rocket Rob’s in Central Lake? Flatbread pizzas at Lulu’s in Bellaire? And that’s just on this side of the County. I smell serious competition. Also garlic. I stand ready to taste-test all comers in an effort to evaluate your claim. It’s the least I can do for Torch Lake consumers.

Gerry, I will back you up in the pizza taste off, just tell me when to head north! My family has a yearly taste competition which began when one cousin said that she knew where the best beef jerky in California was made, and her cousin said it couldn’t beat the one he knew up in Amador County and so they had a tasting up at the Yosemite Bug, a great, funky little lodge near Yosemite.
All comers brought their samples and my mother did up some rules. They all sat around in a room and had some jerky. They went around the circle and finally got it down to two entries. Finally everyone tasted the finalists, voted, and Amador County won. I was not able to get there with my Southern entry, where we have 5 months of great jerky weather…flattened, heated by the sun, kept moist by the humidity, smoked by exhaust, and available for gathering along any major highway!

Now you see you’ve opened up another whole can of worms, because we think the best jerky in the whole country is made right here in Torch Lake Township. The Eastport Market carries packets of jerky seasoning, but secret recipes flourish in many a kitchen. We raise fine beef in this township, but you can get an argument that venison, elk, and buffalo make more flavorful jerky. There is even an argument for wild turkey jerky, but I have my doubts.
