It was a fine day for basking on the beach, committing a little artism. Babs Young writes: This is Eastport’s resident plein aire painter extraordinaire Margie Guyot out on Lake Michigan this afternoon. Many of you have seen her work exhibited at Dennos, Crooked Tree, JRAC and many other places. It was a beautiful day and so warm that we both took our coats off while out there. You can see more of Margie’s work on her website.
I’ll bet they were up at Antrim Creek, one of Margie’s favorite places to paint. Don’t you want to see the piece? I do. I’ll ask nicely.

When Margie paints in less than tropical climates, does she use Vodka, as paint thinner, to keep it from freezing?

She’s written about her winter plein aire technique before, but I forget how it goes. She’ll tell us, or I’ll find the link. I suspect Margie has an internal furnace that just keeps blazing away when she’s in painting mode – which is most of the time.

Wow her work is interesting! And yes please ask her nicely to show us the piece!

Yes it is indeed. I gather you’ve been over to the website to explore. The first time I ever went to her studio it was like walking into a parallel universe where everything – everything – was more vivid.

This was at Barnes Park. Luckily, Babs pulled up right when I got there. With the sun beating down and the hill in back, plus no wind, it actually was quite balmy. After Babs left I hiked a little further north and did a second painting. When I was leaving, my foot fell into a crevass and down went the painting, face-down into the snow. Had to pull my foot out, then the boot liner and finally the boot. Painting got slightly smeared but I should be able to touch it up today. Heading out to Banks Twp. park or maybe Norwood today. It’d been such a dreary, dark and gloomy winter, all this sunshine has gotten me excited!

You know, Miss Sadie kept telling me we should walk up to Barnes but I was in writing mode and we came home. Not that it did me much good. I should bury the results face down in a crevasse and move on. Here it is another gorgeous day and we get to start all over again. Excellent.

She does beautiful work. Very cheery colors, too. Thanks for this post.

You are very welcome. Margie loves color, but she can do some astonishing landscapes in shades of pale, too. Also nightscapes in shades of dark.

I really enjoyed looking at the works on Margie’s site. I admire an artist who can paint glass. I mean, the image of glass, as in glassware. That’s hard to do. Detailed.
I enjoyed the landscapes, also. Less detail, but more movement and lively color.
I may have to get out, in the weather and paint. It looks like fun.

I think all of it was fun except the falling through the ice part. Want to borrow my snowshoes? (RTFF got me some fierce ones with ice claws on them.)

Ahh, the nightscapes I remember those, beautiful…

Love those blue shadows captured so artistically by Babs.
I followed your link to Margie’s website and just loved her apple still lifes. You Michigan folk are all so clever and talented.

Babs says the same of you. (I sent her a link to your Zentangles.)

Oh! I came in right behind flandrumhill at Margie’s and discovered she likes honeycrisps as much as I do!
And I did enjoy the paintings. I was impressed by her tablecloths. All of those folds and creases have to be technically difficult. One of these days I’ll do a little tour of the whole gallery.

Margie’s an inspiration to me. She enjoys scaring herself with a challenge. I’m trying to learn that from her.

ooohhh…good concept…scaring herself with a challenge. I need to think about that myself. Margie motivated me to get out the watercolors that have been in the basement for over a year…and to start working on something I started in March of 2010. Just a little. Don’t want to scare myself. Or do I.

I am taking this Margie Guyot Principle as my motto for awhile: It’s a good way to control one’s panic, comparing everything in a painting to one object’s size.
