Those of you from Away will not find this compelling reading. Just wait until tomorrow, OK? There will be spaniels, lakes, excellent treats–all the usual suspects. Those of you from Around Here are likely to learn something useful.
This afternoon Chris and Sonny opened their Torch Lake Market cafe to the huddled masses yearning to understand their communications options. HDTV, DVRs, digital phone service, and yes, real internet.
A lot of people came, including Jeff Berlin, the Charter sales rep from Petoskey. He brought orange sheets (packages for new customers) and yellow sheets (packages for existing customers) and order forms and a good attitude. We tested him.
The basic message is this. The official launch date for the Charter upgrade in Torch Lake Township is Tuesday, December 13. If you already have Charter cable TV, you received a letter today that outlines your options. You can do nothing, in which case your service will automatically drop back to a very basic level and your bill will drop, too. Or, you can choose one of the special introductory packages on offer. Jeff will explain it all to you. You can also add – or purchase a la carte – highspeed internet service and/or telephone service. If you want the telephone service, you can keep your existing phone number.
If you do not have a Charter cable TV subscription, you have a similar menu of choices. And if all you want for Christmas is your internet . . . you can have that too. (Nobody wants to sell me the Porsche, on account of they say I cannot drive it, but they are willing to sell me the minivan, and given that I’ve been riding a tricycle for the last couple of years, it looks like a big improvement. The installer is supposed to be coming on Thursday, December 15. I will let you know how that goes.)
If you are a snowbird who flew south for Thanksgiving, your best option might be to wait until a couple of months before you return to make your decision. If you are here year-round, you might want to figure out what you want to do before December 13. You can call Jeff. He is a real live person from Petoskey, and he knows where Torch Lake Township is. You can reach him here:
Note: If you are an internet service provider from another company and would like to let people know about other internet options, please leave a comment. I’ll be happy to give you an opportunity to make your case, too. May a thousand flowers bloom. Real competition is good for everyone.

I am happy for us too. Perhaps I am living in a fool’s paradise? (That’s OK. They know me here.)

yea yea, that’s wonderful for all of you who are stuck in dialuphell!!! I don’t think I could go back EVER.

Not just those of us on dialup but those of us on the very basic wireless that’s been available in parts of the township, too. IF the Charter system lives up to expectations, it’s going to provide much better speed and reliability.

Soon we can post large images, sound files and video clips without having to think of your slow connection Gerry.
You must feel like the children longing for Christmas.
… they would soon learn who I am too!

For a long time I’ve felt like a child who knew all the other kids had Christmas and knew that she would never have it except when she went to their houses the next day to play with their toys. Now I am cautiously allowing myself to feel like a kid waiting for Christmas–only this year it comes on December 15.

We have Charter TV & received “the letter” yesterday. We decided to go with the new Expanded Service & called 888-438-2427, & talked to 5 different people. None were aware of “the letter”, but did some research & 45 minutes later, informed us that our cost for expanded service, with HBO, would go from our present $64 per month to $78 per month. They had no way to take our new order yet, but Greg from Vancouver, Wash. promised to call us back when they were able to do so. Sure wish I hadn’t forgot about the local meeting.

Jane, I don’t know what the heck is going on at Charter in Traverse City, but I recommend you call Jeff Berlin in Petoskey. He will tell you about the packages and take your order.
This is the kind of foul-up that makes people cynical about prospects for future service.

And an update–Bill Morand, the Charter Communications Manager who has been good about providing quality information, read your comment, Jane, and heard about the similar concerns voiced at the meeting. He wrote: “As for the front-counter and telephone responses – I will get on that, post haste.” Then, a little later, “I just got off a call regarding the Torch Lake upgrade. You should find your earlier concerns address[ed] – hopefully – to satisfaction.”

I’m vicariously excited for you, Gerry. I actually remember being thrilled beyond words when we first got cable tv (not knowing that I was trading four channels of rubbish for hundreds of channels of rubbish!) and even more so when our first dialup internet arrived. Broadband was like a breath of fresh air in it’s turn, and I was positively beside myself! Familiarity surely does breed contempt though – if a page takes longer than the blink of an eye to load, I hear myself grumbling (and feel my clicky-finger twitching).
May your installation be trouble free, and your new internet connection be all that you’ve wished for.

I thank you, Fee. I suspect that any telecommunications installation is bound to be fraught–and I dare not speculate with what. But on to the next chapter. (I am not acquiring a television connection at this point. I am already overstimulated.)

Yes indeed, many nice people, many of them regulars. Some new faces, too–now to get them to come back for breakfast and lunch and pizza and sausages.
