Babs Young writes: These flowers are in bloom my garden right now, but I do not know the name. I love them and the way they are curled before they open.
I have to admit that curling business is a neat trick. Makes them look all Aladdin and the Forty Thieves. Anyone know what they are? Some kind of lily, I suppose.

A Friend of Babs sent a forward to a Friend of a Friend who writes: The mystery flower is blackberry-lily, Iris domestica. It is not a true lily at all,but an unusual iris native to China. The English name comes from the fruiting cluster of black, fleshy seeds. Now we know.

I would never have known it’s name, but it’s very pretty.

I’m taken with it myself. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a garden, but this sort of thing makes me feel a wistful pang. (Then I go lie down and the feeling passes.)

Lovely, lovely! And while nothing like it, the blackberry lily reminds me to keep watch for the blooming of my closed gentians this fall. So easy to forget to look for them….

Good to look for the small and reliable beauties, just going about their winsome business.

I was just prepared writing about the name of the flower – which until minutes ago was unknown to me.
The wolf didn’t come this time! Now, what was the problem with wordpress?

Oh dear–I would hate to be like that little boy! The problems are mainly related to even slooooower than usual dialup and to WordPress’s own issues with password security and tinkering with the backstage part of this magnificent production. While we Await Developments, perhaps I’ll go to two posts a week. I can just about manage that.

Very pretty flower, I had no idea what the name was, but the description about the black berries makes me think maybe I’ve seen it at that stage in it’s life.

Now we are all going to sit back to see if Babs can produce the relevant photos of the seeds. All in due time of course. No rushing Mama Nature OR Babs in my experience.
