Katherine writes: “Loon in the misty pink morn.” That’s what I’d call this if I were waxing poetical and all that. It is nice to be able to watch them and guess when they will dive and where they will come up. I got several photos of empty lake where there WAS a loon a second ago. They always sound so forlorn.

It does look very peaceful, I could probably sit and watch it for hours.

I’m glad to see you up and about. Watching loons is a very fine thing.

Thank you for bringing back fond memories of Rhinelander. As a young city man I moved to the northwoods so Gerry could be near her grandparents. One day walking alone in the back forty I heard a water pump running (plunk, plunk…) and was quite surprised when I found the true source of the sounds. A loon with its neck and beak stretched to the sky making its call.

That is the very first time I have ever heard someone compare a loon cry to a water pump. See, this is where I get my gift for inscrutable metaphors and astonishing similes.

Lovely atmospheric sight. Wish this picture had sound!

I wish it had sound, too. Grass River Natural Area has loon calls on its site. Just hover your cursor over the pictures at the bottom of the homepage to hear a rushing stream, peepers, an owl, and the loons. Then you can go explore the site, and then you can go visit the Natural Area. It is perfectly wonderful.

When we were in Maine two years ago, we thought we heard wolves or coyotes, later we found out that it was the loons! They certainly don’t have “bird voices” LOL

All my favorite birds sound like something otherworldly. Loons, owls, sandpiper cranes. But loons . . . they are the song of the north.

The soft, muted colors and horizontal composition create peacefulness. Lovely.

I never know what Katherine’s going to come up with, but it’s always special.
