Alana Haley from Pine Hill Nursery sent a press release.  There’s a new Garden Cafe at Pine Hill Nursery, and Julie Kamp is in charge.  Plus—and this is gonna save me a lot of gas—they’re partnering with Java Jones of Elk Rapids on this enterprise.  Oh boy oh boy.

I went over there yesterday and bought lunch.  The turkey wrap with avocado, swiss cheese, hummus and onion ($6) was delicious and there was a lot of it.  The chocolate cookie ($1) was sinful.  I tasted samples of the chicken and mushroom soup and the vegetarian chili, too, and both were very good.  The soup was a broth version, rather than creamed, and I liked the lightness.  The chili was complex, richly flavored soul food and I will have a whole bowl of it the next time I’m there ($3.50).

Julie explained that the food is prepped at Java Jones and then assembled at the Cafe.  Java is one of my favorite places in Elk Rapids.  Good coffee, excellent treats, a fireplace, free wifi, what’s not to like?  But unless I’m going to Stuff’n’Such for socks or shoes or a comforting word with Louan, it’s a long way to go for a cup of coffee.  OK, and a treat.  It’ll be nice to have Java goodies 13 miles closer to the Writing Studio and Bait Shop.

The Garden Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch until 2:00 pm.  No, this does not mean that I will abandon my back table at Sonny’s, are you kidding?  Sonny’s has cinnamon rolls and Chris and Sonny and The Breakfast Club.  But Java will have Julie, and Sandy Naples, and all those flowers.  I will simply go out to eat more often.

Alana says you can arrange special orders, group orders and take-out with advanced notice. For more information, or to place an order, please call Julie at 599-2824.
