Photographer Scott Thomas, who blogs at Views Infinitum, has issued a call for a Collective Shoot. The assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to photograph a Local Area Landmark in your hometown and tell us about it. Landmarks can be buildings, geographical formations, natural areas, or historic places. The landmark does not have to be world famous but known to your community. The time of this shoot runs from now until midnight (your local time) next Wednesday, January 28, 2009.
I thought it would be an interesting challenge. How to choose the Local Area Landmark? Define local . . . figure out what is both photogenic and widely known . . . get over there when it’s not snowing . . . OK, I’m on the case. And to make our submission special, I invite all the regular Torch Lake Views contributors and any local readers who feel like chiming in to help. Just take your pictures before midnight Wednesday and send them to me. I promise to arrange them artistically in a post and link it to Scott by the deadline. We will have a Collective Shoot within a Collective Shoot. How cool is that? (Very cool. It is January in northern Michigan after all.) Besides, if all of you help me, Torch Lake Township will not embarrass itself.
Here, just to get the creative juices flowing, are examples already linked to the Collective Shoot:
- Southfork Ranch (yes, the setting for Dallas)
- The new concert hall in Copenhagen
- Herlev Hospital in Copenhagen
- The Dog Shack and the Soldier’s Monument in a small town south of Lake George and north of Saratoga
- Tulip bulb fields already in bloom in Holland (as in the Netherlands, not as in southwest Michigan!)
- The Manhattan, Kansas Union Pacific Depot

Me too, Scott! I’ve got three in so far, not counting all the ones I took myself in hopes of something usable. Thank goodness for The Regulars. Without them my pantry would be bare indeed.
I am having the best time following the links to all your regulars.
