First night of Chanukah

Last night was the first night of Chanukah.  The lighted menorah flickers in the window every night for eight nights, celebrating . . . well, that depends on who you ask.  History is complex, and the battles between Hellenes and Hasmoneans occurred a long time ago.  Everyone agrees, though, that it’s a very good time to be with people you care about and eat latkes (potato pancakes fried in oil).
