Here’s the word from the Bargys, the Dawsons, the Kamps and the Kings about what you can pick now and in the coming week at the farms and orchards of Torch Lake Township, and about what they’re picking for you that you can scarf up at the markets. Keep in mind that Mama Nature is a fickle hussy, and the schedule is subject to her whims.
- King Orchards is U-pick Central, with apricots and raspberries – and this just in, early peaches – ready now. Their sweet corn-the stuff of dreams-has begun to come in, too.
Apricots, raspberries, nectarines and plums were everywhere.
- Good Nature had lots of dark sweet cherries, early peaches, and a great smile thrown in for free.
Cherry View had Queen Anne cherries, pretty plums, and their own Torch View Vineyards Riesling.- Bargy’s had some early Lodi apples – and of course those pies . . .
- Coming soon: more peaches, more nectarines, early apples.

It all looks and sounds very enticing. Is there a local dairy that makes ice cream containing some of the fabulous fruit? As I recall it, the Michigan State dairy made delicious ice cream oh so long ago.

MSU did – and does – make world class ice cream. So does Moomers, over in Long Lake Township. As far as I know, none of the dairy farms over here make ice cream, but Royal Farms market up in Atwood sells Moomers. Darn. Now I’m hungry.
