Early in February Eastport residents Bill and Dianne Warner opened a pastry shop in a former grocery store in Atwood, and quickly built a loyal following. (I, for example, would follow them anywhere for a peach and cream cheese bear claw.) This in itself is remarkable enough in these times, but wait – there’s more. Their children work there – and they like it!
I’d met sons Bill J. (the apprentice pastry chef) and Tyler on opening day. Yesterday daughter Amanda was presiding over the glass case. She introduced me to the chocolate mocha lava cakes. “Just put one in the microwave for 30 seconds. The inside liquifies and makes a sauce . . . ” Sold.
They make pizza on their own focaccia bread. They make innovative wedding cakes decorated with fresh herbs, and elegant traditional versions in sculptured white. They make exquisite layer cakes and sell them by the slice on weekends. They make those bear claws, and giant cinnamon rolls, and coffee cakes with cherries or blueberries, and scones, and cookies, and sourdough bread. Everything is made from fresh ingredients.
They plan to offer pizza by the slice, and will add tables and chairs so customers can have a cup of coffee and eat their bear claws politely, rather than getting crumbs all over the car on the way home. I put them on the “In Business” list so their phone number (676-0073) will be handy. You might want to drop in. It would be the neighborly thing to do.

Another reason for a drive to the Mackinac Bridge as soon as possible! Thanks for this great tip, Gerry.

Believe me, it will be worth it. Bring Sarah – Friske’s Market (also in Atwood the Adorable, a bit north of New York Cakes) sells cherry dog treats and many other marvels. And let us know if you’re headed this way – you could have morning coffee at Sonny’s Torch Lake Market and meet Babs Her Ownself.
