Our Detroit vacation featured a side trip to Ann Arbor. (It takes less time to get there from Rob and Alicia’s townhouse than it takes me to get to Traverse City from the Writing Studio & Bait Shop. Geography is so subjective.)
Saturday was sunny and ridiculously warm. Perfect for a short hike along the Huron River and through the hilly Arboretum, conveniently located near the Cardiovascular Center of the vast University of Michigan Hospital complex. The “Arb” was full of students talking on their cellphones while running. I don’t remember ever having that much energy. In fact, at the top of a steep path I was glad to meet a couple of EMTs patrolling the area in a spiffy all-terrain Basic Life Support unit. I think we should have one of these in Torch Lake Township. If we had one I would take the First Medical Responder course just so I could drive it.
If I’m in Ann Arbor anyway, I’m pretty sure to end up at Zingerman’s, but the line was pretty long and we were hungry. Rob and Alicia pondered alternatives.
We ended up at Argiero’s, an Italian place across from the Farmer’s Market with good pasta, cheerful service, and an outdoor patio. There was entertainment, too—the guy at the next table was trying to impress his date with his sophistication, putting me in mind of one of the wild turkeys strutting in my driveway last week. Ah springtime.
