Just as I was giving in to my urge to do Arts and Crafts again, particularly Swedish straw ornaments, Alana Haley sent me a release about the Scandinavian-themed Winterfest over in East Jordan January 16-18. Would this be a good daytrip? It would. They’ve packed so much into the weekend that I hardly know where to begin:
- “. . . sledding, cross country skiing and snowshoeing on the Wagbo hills overlooking the beautiful Jordan River Valley”
- Scandinavian Crafts workshops, including “Weaving a Birch bark Ring,” “Brewing Ancient Finnish Ale” and “Finger weaving a Traditional Sash”
- Scandinavian-style food
- A torch-lit nature hike, “Hiking with Vikings”
There’s more. Some of it is free, some of it involves modest fees. You can find all the details in Alana’s press release. You can find me over there on Saturday learning to brew ale and hiking with vikings. I don’t see how either one of us can go wrong.

It’s a bit far for me to do as a day trip, but it sounds like excellent fun; I shall have to see through your eyes, please weave a birch bark ring for me to see 🙂

You see, Heather, this is why you need to plan a vacation at Torch Lake. Then you’ll have a base and you can take all kinds of daytrips. I believe I will learn to make the birchbark ring. If it goes well, I’ll have another little enterprise for the winter. Heaven knows I have enough birch trees, half of them ready to fall down.
Beth, you should see it today. We had a good 5-6″ of fluffy lake effect overnight, and it’s very nice.
