There are a lot of tumbledown wooden structures in Antrim County–barns and icehouses and privies and cabins that have long since outlived their usefulness. They tend to molder away gently, becoming more picturesque as time passes. There are a fair number of signs in Antrim County, too, advertising everything from U-Pick peaches to Lakefront Condominiums. Put it all together, and there are wonderful opportunities for the enterprising photographer with a sense of humor. Thus the latest from Katherine Berst:

Does anyone else remember the Southern Fried Chicken Motel in Van Buren County? I still have a picture of that sign.

I missed the chicken motel, but somewhere I have a photo of a gilded sign that promises “Watches and Grandfathers repaired.”
